I’ve seen a lot in my time, and one thing that never changes is the dream of owning your own home. It’s a cornerstone of financial security, a place to build a life and a legacy. The government knows this, and they’re trying to help. Labor’s recent expansion of the First Home Guarantee Scheme is their latest attempt to give first-home buyers a leg up.

What's the Deal?

Essentially, the government is removing the cap on the number of people who can get into the market with a tiny 5% deposit, and they’re getting rid of income limits. Sounds great, right? For some, it will be. It’ll slash the time it takes to save for a deposit, and that’s a huge win. I’ve been there, I know the struggle. Every little bit helps.

But is it all good news?

Here’s where we need to be smart. Some experts are saying this is just going to pour more fuel on the fire, driving up house prices and making things even tougher in the long run. They’re worried it’s a ‘backwards step’ that helps people who would have bought a house anyway, while making it harder for those who are really struggling. It’s a classic case of unintended consequences.

Look, I’m all for helping people get ahead. But we need to be realistic. The real problem is supply. We’re just not building enough houses. While this scheme might help a few people in the short term, it’s not a long-term solution. It’s like putting a band-aid on a broken leg. What we really need is a government that’s serious about building more homes. That’s the only way we’re going to solve this housing crisis for good. So, while you should absolutely take advantage of this scheme if it helps you, don’t lose sight of the bigger picture. Keep pushing, keep saving, and keep demanding real change.
